I have a 14yo son who has Asperger's, I took him out of school as
his anxiety levels were extremely high. I am trying to home educate but
any form of formal learning sends him into a panic. If I suggest
researching a topic he is interested in his anxiety overwhelms him and
he is unable to focus. I am really concerned that it will appear at our
next home ed inspection as if we dont do anything and that he receives
no education. Anyone have similar experience or any advice please.

Also can anyone give me some advice about utonomous home ed? Many Thanks

Oh and hello everyone.

Suzanne

My son's anxiety levels were extremely high at secondary school and for a couple of months after he started HE but he managed to settle down at home and focus on education. About 6 months into HE he felt very relaxed and almost a completely different person from when he was at school. He could focus intensely on any topic that interested him and he caused no problems on trips out.

I think the best advice is to identify what is causing such high levels of anxiety because only then will it be possible to work out a solution. Is it anything to do with school or LA inspectors? Does he fear things that are largely beyond his control? I strongly recommend that you consult a psychologist knowledgeable about AS if you cannot identify the cause or the problem persists more than another month or so.
